What Are GMOs? (Genetically Modified Organism)

Q: What Are GMOs?

A: GMO is short for genetically modified organisms. The most common application of this term relates to food production on the farms and plots. This may include crops and livestock which are later converted into processed foods and meat that humans consume. The modification of the plant or livestock is usually done to the seed in order to influence the quality and quantity of what is finally produced.

The actual scientific process of creating GMO involves looking for best traits in certain seeds and mixing them with others making a hybrid seed with special qualities. This is essentially cross-breeding that is done in the laboratory.

Q: Why Are They Necessary?

A: GMOs are often justified because of their ability to "positively" influence production outcomes. They give much control to human beings taking it away from nature. For example, by genetically modifying crop seed, scientists are able to produce a drought resistant crop that can adjust to climate change. This is said to help alleviate climate change induced food shortages.

Scientists are also able to manipulate the genetics of a crop seed causing more to be produced with less. This might mean a small portion of land producing much more than was previously possible with ordinary seed. This ensures food security were land is limited, for example.

Q: What Are The Dangers Of GMOs

A: First and foremost the most worrisome dangers of GMOs pertain to human health. For a very long time there has been debate around the overall effects of genetically modified crops on humans. Some countries have even gone as far as legislating against GMO foods.

It has been observed that chickens, for example, that are feed GMO chicken feed tend to have a lot of fat. In fact these chickens can grow very much bigger than the other birds feed with ordinary feed. This negatively impacts healthy eating in humans leading to possibly high cholesterol levels in regular consumers. Bad cholesterol known as LDL is responsible for heart disease and hypertension amongst other chronic diseases.

GMO crops in particular may also become insect resistant, produce resistant weeds and higher levels of plant estrogens. These have long-term negative health benefits.

Q: What Is American Government Policy On Labeling GMOs?

A: The main concern amongst many people is that the FDA does not make it compulsory for GMO foods to be labeled as such. This makes it extremely difficult to avoid them even if you wanted to. As a result many people are turning to organic food on the local farmers market which in a bid to eating only foods grown naturally. America is also at loggerheads with some of its international trading partners who insist on GMO foods imported from America being labeled as such.

Diabetes And The Long Term Dangers

Diabetes has hidden dangers that begin before diagnosis and continue to worsen if certain steps are not taken to prevent the complications that are the true, "killers" in terms of diabetes.

Statistics show that there are around 18 million diabetics in America, both Type 1 and Type 2. It is amazing how many people, diabetics included, who have no idea what dangers a diabetic faces over their lifetime. A diabetic, all things being equal, lives almost 10 years less than their non-diabetic counterpart on average.

Why do diabetics life shorter life spans than non-diabetics? The answer is both simple and complicated. Simple in explaining in general terms, complicated in the medical sense. Without traveling the complicated route in this article, I will try to give a simple, straight forward answer to the above question. Diabetics live shorter lives than non-diabetics because of diabetic complications.

What Are Diabetic Complications?

Diabetic complications are chronic medical conditions that begin to affect the body of the diabetic. These complications are brought about mostly by a condition the medical community had named, "Advanced Glycation End products" which is simply, "excess sugar" saturating the inside of the cells of the body. This condition also called AGE for short includes coronary artery disease, vascular disease, blindness, kidney disease, retinopathy (blindness) and loss of feeling in the hands and the feet (peripheral neuropathy) among others.

Diabetes in the early stages does not produce symptoms. Unless found during a routine medical exam, it is possible for a diabetic to remain undiagnosed for years. It is during these years that the beginnings of diabetic complications can gain a foothold due excess sugar in the cells (AGE). The statistics show there is the possibility of as many as over 5 million people going about their normal lives while having undiagnosed diabetes.

Are Diabetic Complications A Certainty?

While the current consensus is that the formula for diabetic complications Diabetes + Time = Complications. What this means is there is a much higher potential of a diabetic becoming diagnosed with one or more diabetic complications over time. This is partly due to how well the individual monitors and controls his/her blood sugar.

Drastic rises and falls of blood sugar can be hard on the body and the excess sugar present in the cells create havoc on the different nerves within the body as well as the capillaries, veins, and arteries. The evidence to date show that excellent control of blood sugar and an active lifestyle goes a very long way in preventing and/or slowing down the onset of diabetic complications.

The Different Types Of Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes - Type One and Type Two. Type One attacks children and young adults and is characterized by the pancreas failing to produce insulin which is a hormone that breaks down sugars and starches while converting them into energy. Type Two occurs usually later in an adult's life and is characterized by the pancreas being unable to produce enough insulin due to several factors, obesity being one of them.

Around 10 percent of diabetics are Type One while the other 90 percent are Type Two. The major difference between the two being that Type One diabetics are completely dependent on insulin and take daily injections while the Type Two's have both those who require insulin shots while others can rely on oral medication and/or changes in diet and exercise.

The Risk Factors Surrounding Diabetes

There are several risk factors that can push a pre-diabetic into full blown diabetes.

1) being overweight.

2) family history of diabetes,

3) lack of adequate exercise.

4) history of gestational diabetes (occurs during pregnancy and usually disappears after delivery).

5) certain ethnic groups

People over 45 years of age and has one or several of the risk factors mentioned above should be screened for diabetes each year, preferably during an annual medical exam. It has been shown that people with these risk factors comprise the majority of diagnosed cases of diabetes each year.

What Tests Help Diagnose Diabetes Cases?

There are two, main tests used for determining whether or not a person has a glucose intolerance:

1) Fasting Plasma Glucose Test

2) Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

Both of these tests can determine glucose intolerance which is where blood sugar is higher than what is considered normal. This is not always an indication of diabetes however.

Can The Onset Of Diabetes Be Prevented?

People with the above risk factors can go a long way toward preventing the development of full-blown diabetes by making significant lifestyle change. What are lifestyle changes? Changing unhealthy diets to more blood sugar friendly ones, doing enough exercise to help offset increased blood sugar levels and keep the body healthy and losing weight especially if considered obese by the medical community.

If you are pre-diabetic you need to stay on a strict diabetic diet. Ask your healthcare professional for a diet that meets that criteria and limit cakes, candy, cookies, and other things made of simple sugars. Eat small, nutritious meals and eat 5 times a day instead of only three.

If you are already diagnosed with full-blown diabetes, you should follow the same diet while under the meticulous care of your healthcare professional. Keep your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar within proper limits and have your eyes checked every year.

Diabetes can contribute to blindness, kidney disease and heart disease. Complications caused nearly 70,000 deaths in 2000.

What Can The Diabetic Look Forward To?

Diabetic complications can be prevented or lessened for a longer time period by paying serious attention to lifestyle. A diabetic who eats right, keeps his blood sugar in control and within accepted limits, exercises and gets proper rest can expect to have a quality of life that is much higher in terms of the pain and suffering that diabetic complications brings into the lives of diabetics who do nothing to change their lifestyle.

What begins to occur in the diabetic who starts to develop complications because of uncontrolled blood sugars over time is a life filled with the possibility of becoming an invalid, either blind, an amputee, or suffering renal failure or a heart attack.

The above paints a rather grim picture if lifestyle changes are not adhered to. Research has shown that the diabetic that keeps their blood sugar within acceptable limits and follows a healthy, diabetic lifestyle that has been shown to be effective against diabetic complications stands a much better chance of not developing many of the complications their less than dedicated counterparts do.

There is a new derivative of thiamine (Vitamin B1) available now that is showing great promise in greatly reducing the excess sugar in the cells of the diabetic, the process known as Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGE).

Is Benfotiamine Effective Against Diabetic Complications?

Benfotiamine is a lipid soluble derivative of thiamine. Japanese researchers developed benfotiamine in the 1950's and later patented it in the United States in 1962. No one in the US medical community paid much attention to it at the time. For the past 12 years in Europe it has been used for neuropathy, retinopathy and other uses.

The chemical name and formula for benfotiamine is: S-benzoylthiamine-O-monophosphate (C19H23N4O6PS). It wasn't until a group of researchers in New York at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University released the results of their research in 2003 in Nature Medicine Magazine did the rest of the world begin to take a look at this substance.

Benfotiamine is unique and was reported by Michael Brownlee, M.D., as showing much promise in preventing nerve and blood-vessel damage in diabetics. Every diagnosed diabetic has been told by his/her healthcare provider that diabetic complications are the true killers in terms of diabetes.

healthy Foods for Diabetes
In addition Diabetics should also know what foods to avoid and dangerous for this disease. The following is a brief description of the food should be eaten and which should be avoided by diabetics.

Foods to Eat for Diabetics:
People suffering from diabetes need to eat healthy in order to keep their blood sugar levels under control. Though they are not left with much variety, as far as food is concerned but the vegetables prescribed for them are not all that awful.

The French bean, also known as the kidney bean is a good option. If cooked with care, it tastes awesome and no less than a delicacy. The beans have a greater fiber content and are rich in carbohydrates. Thus, it is prescribed to patients suffering from diabetes.

A suggested natural remedy could be, juice extracted from French beans mixed with the juice of Brussels sprout. This is good for the health as it stimulates production of insulin.

Bean decoction is another effective medicine. For this you require 60 grams of fresh bean pods, weighed after removing the seeds. This has to be boiled in four liters of water for four hours. The decoction must necessarily be prepared on slow fire. Then the potion has to be sieved through a muslin cloth and let to cool for eight hours. It is advised that this decoction be taken a glassful after every two hours for 4-8 weeks at a stretch. This must be prepared fresh everyday as it loses its medicinal qualities after 24 hours.

Dr. James Anderson of the Human Nutrition Research Centre of the US Department of Agriculture deduced that foods with low cholesterol content help prevent heart ailments. Also, the beans being rich in soluble fiber reduce the sugar level in blood and thus are healthy for diabetics who are greatly prone to the risk of heart disease. Lettuce has 3% or less of carbohydrates. People who wish to cut down on their weight can have plenty of tomatoes as it has low carbohydrate content and also does control levels of sugar in the urine.

Soya bean is very nutritious and helps to keep a check on blood sugar levels. Studies as early as 1910 has shown that Soya bean is rich in protein and fat and low in starch. It helps regulate and reduce the quality of urinary sugar in diabetics.

Onion, be it raw or cooked is also an effective home remedy. It reduces the sugar levels in blood and the more it is eaten the faster it would help lower blood sugar. Around 1960’s, there was discovery of anti diabetic compounds in onion. These were similar to anti-diabetic pharmaceuticals which help synthesis of insulin and its release, namely, allyl, propyl, disulphide and allicin.

A balanced diet, well supplemented with vegetables, fruit and juices should be ideally taken. One needs to cut down on the intake of fat based food and sweets. Also, you should indulge in an active lifestyle. Walking is a must on regular basis. Smoking and drinking must be avoided. The blood sugar should be measured at regular intervals and body weight should be maintained. This would enable a diabetic to live a healthy life.

Foods to Avoid for Diabetes:
When the cells of the human pancreas don’t generate insulin, it creates Diabetes mellitus. Actually, insulin is useful to split sugar into a form in blood that body can efficiently store and apply to produce energy later. This disease compels you to forget some foods and it demands your diet to be something that is high in soluble fibers and low in saturated fats. A doctor can advice such a patient to consume less carbohydrate products because it might contain high glycemic index.

The rapid increase of this disease has pressed food, beverage, and pharmaceutical companies to make products considering the need of such patients. It’s also true that the doctors often prescribe not to buy such products at random and the products are often very costly as well. Such products might contain more fats and may be that the products just don’t have anything that can be help you.

If you want to keep your blood glucose levels in control, a slight change in your food habit can be the best option. Being a new patient of this disease, doctor may advice you to collaborate with a dietitian or nutritionist, who can endow you with a proper meal and snack plan. You might need to calculate your carbohydrates by pointing out your eating of sugary or starchy foods. Then, you have to adopt new food habit.

The prescription usually suggests the consumption of whole grains and starchy vegetables as the main part of your meal. It demands you to eat a minimum of two servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily. The prescription then states to have proteins available in lean meat, legumes, and cheese. You must consume them in smaller quantities. A slight amount of non-fat or low-fat dairy is fine but it shouldn’t cross the limit for it has fats and sugars. This is a general prescription.

To have a perfect diet for your diabetic case, please consult with a dietitian or nutritionist. Try to consume proper foods but you must also avoid foods such as very salty ones. This is so because high blood pressure is something common in such patients. Not only consumption of fats causes high blood pressure, sodium is largely responsible for this. To avoid this problem, either lessen the salt in your food or buy non-sodium or low sodium salt replacements. Also, avoid foods like crackers, chips, processed or conserved meet products, or canned foods like sardines or soups because they contain extra sodium and salt.

Fats can be really harmful. Cardiovascular diseases often follow diabetic cases. So, avoid dairy products, solid vegetable fats, and butter because they have saturated fats. Before chicken preparation, get the skin off. Also, strive to avoid butter and margarine. Oils obtain from canola or olive can be good. Choose skimmed, low-fat, or non-fat milk, cheese, and yogurt than full cream products. Avoid fried foods and rather boil and bake or simply broil it.
Alcoholic products are not good in such cases. Such food habit is not really difficult provided you have the patience to change.

Keep Yourself away from Harmful Drugs and Alcohol

Drugs and alcohol can destroy a perfectly healthy and fit person. It is advised that you avoid drugs and limit alcohol intake to minimal. Even tobacco causes more health problems than any other drug and is the most addictive and widely used. Cutting down or stopping the use of cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco can save your health and money.

Too much alcohol is definitely dangerous causing liver damage, fetal alcohol syndrome and accidents. Other harmful drugs include marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin or pain pills that are not prescribed for you.

A Healthy Mind is part of a Healthy Body

Try to avoid too much stress and make time in your life for things that are relaxing. Make sure you take little time each day for doing something you enjoy. Get help if you feel depressed or anxious for more than several days at a time.

Also, get enough sleep. People who sleep less are bound to be less healthy as being sleepy reduces concentration, increases mood swings and causes accidents.

Making a change towards a healthy life is not easy nor is it possible in a matter of days. It may take weeks or even months. However, you can be sure that the outcome will be satisfactory.
